A brief history of laser resurfacing treatment

While lasers seem like technology of the future, medical professionals have used laser technology in aesthetics for decades! 

During the 80s and 90s, laser technicians used continuous wave carbon dioxide (CW CO2) lasers to remove the old layer of skin, giving way to fresher, tighter skin that hasn’t been exposed to harmful UV rays from the sun or other natural factors. 

The results from that treatment were great, but they also came with harsh side effects like redness, swelling, discoloration, and even the loss of skin pigmentation! 

Researchers quickly found that to reduce thermal damage, they could use fractional, pulsed and scanned erbium laser systems instead. These penetrate the skin with pulses of laser energy to remove damaged skin in a more controlled manner. 

Recent expansion in laser technology has given us the chance to safely resurface skin while minimizing the occurrence of negative side effects.

Fractional laser resurfacing

• Non-ablative wavelengths are not nearly as aggressive, but are able to treat the skin for other conditions such as acne and uneven skin tone. The wavelengths do this by drilling small thermal injuries into the skin to kickstart collagen and elastin production.

Preparation

• Avoid dermal filler injections for 1 to 2 months before and after your procedure.
• Avoid waxing, facials, hair removal (threading, electrolysis, etc.), extensive sun exposure, or any other laser treatments to the area we will treat at least a week prior to your procedure.
• Stop using topical skin treatments (with the exception of a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen) three days before the treatment.
• Discuss aspirin or other blood thinning medication you are taking during your consultation.

Pre-treatment

On the day of your Halo laser treatment, you should arrive at our office with a clean, dry face and wearing comfortable clothing. We will first apply a topical numbing cream, which will remain on the skin for about an hour to minimize any discomfort the laser may cause.

During the procedure

You will sit or lie down and we will protect your eyes with special safety shields. Your laser specialist will then treat the area(s) of your skin section by section, rolling the laser device’s handpiece in a criss-cross pattern until the treatment is complete.

Facial treatments usually take 35-45 minutes, while chest or neck treatments typically take around 20 minutes. Depending on the treated area and your specific needs, treatment can take up to 90 minutes. 

After care

You should avoid makeup for 24 hours following your treatment, and keep your skin protected with the instructions and products we provide for you after your procedure. Also avoid heavy exercise, hot baths, or saunas for a few days post treatment. 

You might not notice immediate results from your Halo laser treatment in Issaquah, but a phenomenon known as the “Halo Glow” is very common for a few weeks following your appointment. Your skin may appear brighter and more illuminated, showing off your fresh, natural, youthful and beautiful glow. 

Annual maintenance
